School Improvement

Helen Clegg OBE, Director of Primary Academies

Helen retired as Executive Headteacher of Shiremoor primary School in August 2013 after leading the school to success since 1990. The school was recognised as outstanding in three consecutive Ofsted inspections featuring in the Ofsted Publication '20 Outstanding Primary Schools-Excelling against the odds'. Helen became a National Leader of Education and the school a National Support School.Previously the school was awarded IIP Gold Award for Outstanding Practice, three DfES Achievement Awards for Excellence and held Beacon Status for four years. The school became one of the first 100 Teaching schools and Helen has established the Shiremoor Teaching School Alliance working with schools between York and Northumberland to deliver school to school support.

Role of Director of Primary Academies:

  • Responsibility for the performance of primary academies and for improving the achievement, well being and opportunities of pupils
  • Monitor the performance of academies and manage school improvement support programmes
  • Oversee and co-ordinate the work of our Achievement Partners

Ian Lane, Director of Secondary Academies

Ian began his career teaching French and soon went on to become a Head of Modern Foreign Languages, followed by sixteen years of successful senior school leadership, including headship. From there he became a Senior Adviser, working with secondary schools in Newcastle, whilst also working as a School Improvement Partner and National Challenge Adviser across the NE region.

He was Director of School Improvement in Newcastle, a city that has seen significant year on year improvement both in terms of its results and its Ofsted ratings. In this time, Ian has also become a qualified coach and trained as an Ofsted Inspector.
