Inspired Performance from Gateshead School Cup Champions

The U12 indoor five-a-side team at Gateshead?s Thomas Hepburn Academy, is riding high with two recent wins under its belt in the northern five-a-side leagues and a chance to win the North of England finals.

In December the team won the Gateshead Schools FA U12 indoor five-a-side competition ? a series of really tough matches against seven local schools ? and in January, went on to represent Gateshead in the Durham County Schools FA county finals winning against some of the strongest teams in the county.

Now they will be representing the county at the U12 Munich Trophies five-a-side area finals on 6th February where they will compete against teams from Yorkshire, Cumbria and Northumberland.

So far the boys have not been fazed, according to David Frew, head of PE at the academy and team coach. He says: ?They have played brilliantly and secured a landslide result in the last round. I am really proud of them. I always tell them to play their best and if they can honestly say they have done this at the end of a match, we will achieve all that we can. We now have a great chance to go further.?

Team captain, Daniel Smith, continues to provide strong leadership for the team ahead of some more matches later this week. He added: ?Many people say that football is won by the players, but our coach played a huge part in our success. I don?t think we would have won without his support and motivation. I am very proud of the lads because they played like our Academy motto: ?be the best that you can be? and I think we are living up to that expectation.?
