The trustees of Northern Education Trust (NET) are pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Tarn as their new Chief Executive with effect from 1 September 2017 as part of NET’s succession strategy.

Since early 2015 Northern Education Trust has been undergoing a major programme of improvement including increasing staff capacity and introducing new systems in key areas. We have developed a solid corporate and financial base which has allowed us to inject the capacity we need to secure more rapid improvement. We would wish to pay tribute to Ian Kershaw, our current Chief Executive, for his excellent leadership through this period of significant change.

Rob Tarn will bring a wealth of experience in school improvement which is an essential strand of our organisational development programme. Northern Education Trust has taken on schools which have faced intractable challenges over many years. He has considerable experience of working to ensure rapid transformation of schools in Special Measures. He is currently Regional CEO (North) for Outwood Grange Academies Trust. He is also a National Leader of Education.

Commenting on his appointment, Rob Tarn said:

‘NET has taken on many schools which showed signs of endemic failure and begun the process of transformation. I am delighted to join such a principled organisation with such strong values and a complete focus on the needs of children and young people. I am particularly passionate about working in communities of high deprivation and I firmly believe that the transformation of outcomes for young people is the key to regenerating our communities’.

Sir David Carter, National Schools Commissioner, added his support for the appointment. He said:

“I am delighted to hear that the Northern Education Trust has appointed a new CEO in Rob Tarn. Rob’s track record as a leader and school improver during his time at Outwood Grange is very impressive and this is a significant appointment for the trust. I am encouraged by the way that the board at NET have worked so closely with me and the Regional Schools Commissioner and we look forward to seeing the improvements in the academies that everyone wants in the months and years ahead.”
